Stilettos and Diapers: December 2013

2013 in Review

I can say that 2013 has been an amazing year for me and my family. We had ups, downs, tons of transition and loads of fun.

We kicked off the New Year in our pj's and had to set the alarm for 11:55pm so we could catch the ball drop. I think it was a sign of our exhausting year to come. In January, I celebrated 4 years of blogging. I really can't believe this hobby of mine has become such a big part of my life! My favorite look of the month included Pantone's color of the year.

February was a whirlwind. We found out we could potentially be moving to Charlotte and it sent my head spinning. I got crafty and came up with some of my favorite DIY's, like clean Chocolate muffins and my DIY Maxi Skirt. I wore heels that were entirely too dangerous for a mom and loved every second of it.

In March, I went to Blissdom, made an Easter Centerpiece that made me a little proud of my resourcefulness, wore some spring-y colors and continued to work on my overall fitness.

April brought me finally perfecting turning my favorite Crab Cakes into a clean recipe, my sweet big boy turning 5 with his Ninja Turtle party and my second half marathon. My favorite look of the month included a DIY shirt that cost me $8 instead of $220.

My favorite look in May was this feather filled one. We to New York for our friend's wedding and I made some sparkly monogrammed bottles for the wedding morning breakfast. I got up on my high horse for a bit and called bull on the mommy wars.

June was a crazy month. I admitted that I'm not perfect, was able to break the news that we were, indeed, moving to Charlotte and went on a Carnival cruise. Neon and floral made up my favorite look of the month.

July started the crazy for the year. We bought a house, lived in a hotel for a week when the hubs started his new job and vacationed at the beach. It was a tough month, but I decided to find the good and be grateful. My favorite look of the month was also one of my last at our old house.

We were still at the beach in early August while negotiating the sell of our Virginia house, moved into our temporary apartment in Charlotte, added clothing to my boutique, Molly Suzanne, and wore the craziest pants ever (says the hubs). The biggest thing of the month, though, was my big boy starting school. There were lots of grown up tears and plenty of kid smiles. He even documented his first day.

In September, I made summer dresses last through fall, wore my new favorite heels, created some clean Pumpkin Oat Balls and opened up about my struggles with the whole moving transition. We finished a chapter in our lives when the sale of our first home was finalized. So bittersweet!

I discovered in October, that mothering boys isn't for the faint of heart, ran my first race with Cooper, got really into the school mom thing with Halloween classmate gifts and actually got a little dressed up for a date night.

My baby turned 2 in November and we celebrated with an Oh Two-dles Mickey party. The hubs and I went to a black tie charity event (you can read about the charity here!), I shared my favorite breakfast and had the most amazing date night with a 5 year old. We traveled back to DC for Thanksgiving and found out that our new house was going to be ready before Christmas!

In December, we decided to decorate our apartment for Christmas, even though we'd be moving all the stuff to our house, celebrated our 8th Anniversary and I ran my first 10k. I wore some of my favorite looks ever, including a big red skirt, tons of sequins and even some pattern mixing. The best part of the month, was closing on our house the 20th, followed by a special Christmas in our new house! My family came for a couple days, followed by heading to New York, where we will ring in the New Year.

This year has taught me a lot and held so many special moments. I can't wait to see what 2014 holds!

New House Love

It's been a whirlwind past couple of weeks for us. Last Friday, we closed on our new house and we couldn't be happier with it!
Everyone loves a whole family, celebratory cheers!
We spent the weekend unpacking stuff that we had accumulated from our apartment, which turned out to be quite a bit of crap.
Then, 1 week ago, all of the stuff that has been in storage for the past few months was delivered. I can't tell you how excited I was to see our bed, kitchen stuff and my clothes!
Although, all that stuff created quite the disaster.
But we got the boys little spot set up, so they were happy campers.

We were still working on unpacking as Christmas came and went, my family came for a couple days of visiting and we left for New Years with the hubs family in New York. I have tons of work to do when we get home, but can't wait to get it done. I am so happy to be settled, finally, and will be taking you on a little tour once we get through the boxes!

Christmas here was full of all things merry and bright. We had a wonderful day, just me and my boys, surrounded by boxes in our new home. We spent the whole day relaxing, drinking mimosas, eating and playing with new toys. Today, I'm back to the unpacking grind and preparing the house for my family to be here in a few hours! A few days with them, followed by a few days in NY with the hubs family will mean we get to have 3 Christmases. The boys are way excited about it!

And lets talk about this skirt. It's completely over the top, isn't it? I love it so much and I need to find another opportunity to wear it asap. Oh and did I mention it's on sale right now for $20? Yeah. And it comes in several more colors!

Hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas!

All That Glitters {A Fashion Post}

Dress | Bracelet | Clutch (no longer available) | Shoes (Rouen)

New Years came early for me! I am so in love with this glittery dress that I had to get it on. I'll be rewearing it as the ball drops, too!

There was a lot to celebrate this weekend as we finally moved into our house. I'm so grateful, exhausted and ready for Christmas! We haven't wrapped a single thing, so I'm feeling way behind. All of our stuff that has been in storage arrives today and I can't wait to fill this house up! I think the thing I missed the most was my kitchen gear. No my shoes. Or my bed. Yes, I think the bed wins. Callan decided this week was a good time to start waking up at 5:37 every morning. Exactly that time, too and I'm really craving a good nights sleep...

If you want to wear this dress for New Years Eve, there's still time! If you order by today, standard shipping should have it to you next Monday. You have until Thursday if you choose $5 flat rate priority shipping!

One Pair at a Time

28 years ago, in Lagos, Nigeria there was a 9 year old boy. One who was living in such a state of poverty that he didn't own shoes. One day, an American came to the camp he was attending and held a basketball competition. What was the prize? It was a pair of tennis shoes.

The boy won the competition and that seemingly small thing went on to completely change his life. Not only did he have a pair of tennis shoes, but he developed a love and talent for basketball. He competed in sports in Africa and was so talented that he went on to get a full basketball scholarship to several schools in The United States. Since he knew nothing of the US, he picked his school based solely on the look of the pamphlet. He ended up, an African, used to the blazing heat, in North Dakota. But there, he succeeded in college and met his now wife. He went from there to be an executive at a technology company.

All of this was a snowball effect from a pair of shoes.
His success couldn't take away the thoughts of other African children, living in poverty, war and crime. He left his executive job and started a charity to do just what that American stranger had done for him when he was just 9 years old.

His charity has put 10 million pairs of shoes on the feet of 10 million orphans and impoverished children in America and around the world. The number is hard for me to fathom. I'm a shoe lover that has always thought of shoes as a simple fashion statement. To people all over the world, they are a luxury and can also be a complete life changer.

This man lives in Charlotte, where we are now living. After hearing his story, I was so moved by the impact he is making. It's not only on the people who he is providing shoes for, but also the people like me who hear the story and are inspired to do good and who need a reminder to never take our blessed lives for granted.

I'm honored to be able to attend a fundraiser event for his charity next month and to see first-hand the people who have had their lives changed, all because someone decided to give a little of their blessings on to others.

The days are flying, y'all. I should be packing and taking down the Christmas decorations right now, but I'm so over it. I think we'll have a trailer full of random crap everywhere and that's just fine by me.

While I'm living in hobo clothes for the next few days while we move, here's a look at #whatmollywore over the last few weeks.

Blueberry Coconut Pecan Breakfast Cookies {Recipe}

Breakfast Cookies, Coconut cookies, clean eating,
These "cookies" are so very simple and are a perfect make ahead breakfast. (Or snack. Or workout fuel.)

1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1 Tbsp golden flax meal
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup dried blueberries
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
1/4 cup coconut oil, warm enough to be liquid
1 Tbsp honey
1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350. Combine oats, coconut, flax, salt, pecans and blueberries. Stir in bananas, oil, honey and vanilla until well combined.

Press 2 Tbsp mixture into a 2 1/2" round cookie cutter onto a greased cookie sheet. If you're like me, living without your kitchen supplies, just use what you have to make them circles. I used the ring of a mason jar lid and it worked perfectly!

Bake at 350 for 25 minutes or until golden. Cool on pan. Yields approximately 15 cookies.

I think I'm going to try these with dried cranberries to have for Christmas. I think they will be so pretty!

Christmas Gift Guide: For Men

Still in need of holiday gifts? If you're anything like me, the men are the very last gifts purchased. They're so difficult to buy for! With the help of the hubs, I put together this guide, sure to make the men on your list happy.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Since the hubs is 6'3", this is the most important category to him. If your man is over 6', tall clothing is something that will make his life so much easier. The favorite? Tall undershirts. They don't come out of your pants and bunch up under your dress shirt. Kohl's has a huge variety online of clothing for tall men, including outerwear and athletic gear. They even sell some things in the store, including the beloved undershirts.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Hi, Dad. This category is for you. I've bought my Dad khaki pants for past 3 years. It's ridiculous. I found several things at Kohl's this year that are practical, but far more exciting than Khaki pants. Thank goodness.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4  / 5  / 6

This is another area of importance to the hubs. He likes his things on the fancy side. He has the watch case from Christmas a couple years ago and it's perfect for the man who has a watch collection. I think that shaving kit is gorgeous. I love that it takes something so practical and makes it completely elegant.

Make sure you stop at your local Kohl's store, as well. They had a massive section of great priced gifts at my store. They ranged from practical to jokes and everything in between.

If you order from Kohl's online, you have until 12/19 at 11pm to use standard shipping and still receive your gifts by Christmas!

Last Minute DIY Christmas Gifts

It's 8 days until Christmas, I'm moving in 3 days and there's only 3 more days of school. Classmate and teacher gifts have no choice but to be simple, but that doesn't mean they have to be weak!

Mom, I'm in a magazine!

Those are the words I heard from Cooper when I showed him his spread for FabKids.

They are doing a giveaway a day leading up to Christmas and today you can win the look Cooper is wearing! Head here and like FabKids on Facebook to enter. There are still 2 days left, so make sure you check back again tomorrow! Don't forget to select my name in the drop down menu for who sent you to the giveaway!

I know I'm partial, but this kid is simply the cutest. He begged to hold up the Merry Christmas sign during the shoot and I'm pretty sure he picked a winner prop. This will be in our late Christmas/Happy New Year/Just Moved cards that will be going out in January. Or February. Or next Christmas.

Happy Friday, Y'all!

Albion Fit {$100 Giveaway!}

I first heard of Albion Fit one day while scrolling Instagram. I came across these pants and fell in love with the sweet, sweet combination that is workout crops and ruffles.

I got even more excited when I saw that they have a whole "Petal" line including this adorable jacket with thumb holes.

And even this ruffle trim sports bra!

I love that their pieces are unique and girlie. They're practical enough to run a race and fashionable enough to wear running errands.

I often go from workout, to school pickup. While I don't necessarily have to look nice sitting in the line, I like to. I always see someone or have to grab something at the store when I'm wearing ratty gym clothes, too! My Christmas wish list already boast several of these pieces, to avoid situations just like that!

The awesome people at Albion Fit are giving one of you readers a $100 gift card to shop their store! (Christmas gift for yourself, anyone?)

Here's how to enter:

1. Go to and comment on my Instagram giveaway post with name of your favorite item.

2. Bonus: Follow Albion Fit on Instagram and tag 3 friends on my Instagram giveaway post.

3. Bonus: Pin favorite item onto a Pinterest board and paste the link to that pin in an Instagram comment.

Good luck!
