Stilettos and Diapers: Modern Day Lucy and Ricky

Modern Day Lucy and Ricky

I'll admit it for him, the hubs is a complete bed hog. Granted, he's 6'3" and we should probably have a king size bed, but we don't. And I don't want to buy all new bedroom furniture until Cooper needs a queen size bed. Then we'll pass ours on and get a bigger set.

The only problem with that is it's probably 7-8 years from now. 7-8 years of me being squished in the corner. Of me rolling over and getting a big whiff of open-mouth-breather morning breath.

Someone suggested these sheets to me. Yeah, well, the hubs doesn't sleep with his eyes open and will cross that line before I even fall asleep.
I was thinking a solution more like these brilliant people.
Only have it looking more like this:
Or this:
So, I did what all reasonable wives do and suggested we sleep in separate beds. After all, how could he say no when I am currently the size of a mac truck and insist on having 2 pillows plus my body pillow all snuggled up with us?

Then I had my research ready. This article from AARP says sleeping in separate beds can bring couples closer. (Ignore the fact that it talks about couples over 50 and menopause)

Hubs admitted that he loves sleeping alone in the hotel when he travels. (Then I silently sang the Hallelujah chorus) Since our bedroom just so happens to be big enough to put our extra queen bed in it, why not?

Tonight, this brick house of a momma is going to be sleeping peacefully at an appropriate 2 feet away from my dear hubs. No knees in the back. No morning breath. No monster body pillows in his way. No sticking his massive feet through the slats at the end of the bed.

In other words, perfection.

  1. Whoa! I can understand now would be a particularly difficult time to share. But if I were you, I would get a California King. Now. I am sure it would be easy to find a headboard and footboard that coordinates with your current furniture. Plus- complete matchy matchy is out anyway. I know cause I still have it. Lol.
Hubs and I are getting a king soon and are very excited. We feel squished too and I'm not preggo and he's only 5'10".

  2. Haha! I don't blame you one bit. We have a king and I've never been preggers but I know when that happens I may STILL sleep in a separate bed! Our cat sleeps with us so that doesn't help.

I say get the king and put the spare set in the garage (oh wait maybe no room bc of your giant car) or basement or SOMETHIN! Sleep is important!

  4. Sounds like heaven to me! We love our king bed though. You guys have to get one. I never even know Jarrod is in there. The only issue I have now is getting Avery out of the middle! :-)

  5. Glad you guys came to a great solution. I'm not big on the whole separate beds idea because I'm cuddler. However, I do believe in separate cover because my husband is a cover hog.

  6. My husband and I bought a king sized bed before we got married because we both hog the bed. Our bed is actually one of the adjustable beds that sits up puts your legs up and massages and since i am the night owl and like to sit in bed and read or watch tv we got individual beds so our bed is actually 2 twins put together with king size bedding. And since we were using the hubs bedroom furniture when we got married we just bought a headboard that went with it but wasnt the part of the set. We love our king. I didnt understand why before I got married you would need a bed that big but it really is awesome.

  7. My husband is like this! Not only is he a bed hog he's also a cover hog! We've always has a queen bed up until a few months before we moved with LA when we stayed with my parents & had a king. It waaaaas wonderful & I'm kicking myself for not buying a king when we moved here.

  8. This is too funny. The hubs and I have a queen and it is SO not big enough most nights. We need to upgrade to a king, but just haven't yet. I think the time is coming, although, I am really digging this two bed idea :-)

  9. OMG, I love it! Good for you for finding a creative solution! I can't wait to hear if you go back to one bed after baby comes or if you stick with two. :)

  11. I have heard you should replace your mattress every 5-7 years. So maybe you could just say you are due for a new one anyway? When we were first married we slept on a full size bed for a year, and upgraded to a caking as soon as we could. I love our big bed, and will never not have at least a king, but there are times it still feels squishy for some reason. I think it would be awesome to sleep on a ginormous bed of two queens pushed together.

  13. We currently have a full-sized bed. Now, 3 days into being home from our honeymoon, I'm ready for AT LEAST a queen as I'm beginning to think my husband wants to kill me. 2nd night home and he almost pushed me out of bed (at 3 a.m.! How rude!) and then proceeded to elbow me in the eye...

  14. I've considered it. My husband tends to span the bed and, very occasionally, our two kids climb in with us. There is also the part where he snores, drools, and talks in his sleep.... We are two thin people with a kingsized bed, and sometimes it isn't big enough. You do what you gotta do!

  15. I don't blame you one bit! haha! I was pregnant with my daughter and huge and my poor hubby wound up sleeping on the floor because our tiny full size bed just wasn't big enough. We upgraded to a king before I even knew I was pregnant with my son and it's been amazing!

  16. We just put our second bed set up in our spare bedroom (long time coming). The BF slept in there once and it was lovely. I had the whole bed to myself! I should mention that I don't want this to become a habit, but I was craving a good night of sleep in the absolute worst way.

  17. omg, I am so glad you posted this b/c I have seriously brought this up to my husband a NUMBER of times and I always wondered how weird we were for pondering it, haha! The house we live in has no room for an extra bed in our current bedroom but I swear when we finally buy one day we may just do this.
My husband's Nana & Papa have been happily married for almost 60yrs and they both have their own BEDROOMS! They swear this is why they're still in love, lol! Makes total sense tho!
